History of MDCAT Test in Pakistan
Before the NMDCAT, provincial medical entrance exams included the MDCAT, which was administered by the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in Punjab and Balochistan. It was introduced in 1998 as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) at the initiative of Punjab’s then-chief minister, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, in order to combat widespread corruption in HSSC exams at the time. In the years that followed, other jurisdictions began to hold their own medical entrance tests. It was operated by the King Edward Medical University in Lahore from 1998 to 2007. The exam has been administered in Punjab since 2008 by the University of Health Sciences, Lahore. Initially, the Institute of Business Administration held different Entry Tests for MBBS and BDS courses in Sindh’s public colleges run by the provincial government.
The evaluations were then taken over by the National Testing Service (NTS). Following the amendment of the PMDC regulations in 2016, NTS began to administer a consolidated Entry Test for Sindh’s public and private medical and dental colleges. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial medical entrance exam was administered by the Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA) prior to the NMDCAT. The NMDCAT was adopted after the PMDC was disbanded by the federal government in 2020 and the Pakistan Medical Commission was created. About 125,000 students from around the world enrolled for the NMDCAT.
