Is Blogging Still Profitable in 2023?

Do you ever wonder if you can still make a good income from blogging nowadays? You might have considered this income stream but find yourself pondering over questions like its profitability in the current year. I completely understand because I was in the same place five years ago. However, as a full-time blogger earning over $10,000 per month on average, I’m here to share honest insights about what strategies still work and the fastest way to grow a blog from zero.

For those in doubt about blogging, consider what you stand to lose by giving it a shot. From my experience, the expenses associated with blogging are minimal, making it a business with an incredible return on investment (ROI). This is a job I perform from the comfort of my home, allowing me the flexibility to be with my young daughter during these vital early years.

Starting Your Blogging Journey

I’m about to lay out a plan that will guide you to your first $1000 month through blogging. If you’re eager to jump in, join my free 7-day course to kick off your blogging career. Let’s start with the first step: understanding how you’ll make money.

Many new bloggers rush to sign up for Google Adsense to start earning through ads. However, there’s a significant drawback – with low traffic, the payout from Adsense can be meager. When your site garners less than 1000 visitors a month, you may only see earnings of less than $10 from ads. It’s not viable to deter your small audience for such a small return.

Affiliate Marketing: A Better Starting Point

Instead of relying on Adsense, I’d first recommend exploring affiliate marketing. Avoid low-paying programs like Amazon Associates, which also carry significant account suspension risks. There are numerous affiliate networks such as Impact, CJ Affiliates, ShareASale, RewardStyle, ClickBank, and Partnerstack that may be more suited to your niche. For instance, RewardStyle is excellent for fashion and home decor, while Partnerstack is ideal if your site includes software reviews. Toy with these options after you’ve added some basic content to your site and crafted an ‘About’ page.

For those in niches with higher-priced products, like digital goods, eBooks, or online courses, you can witness lucrative commissions of 30% to even 85%. These can be found on platforms like ClickBank or Digistore24, offering the potential to earn a substantial commission with even a modest number of sales.

When to Consider Display Ads

Let’s circle back to display ads. While I recommend against Adsense for new bloggers, there is a time when integrating ads can be beneficial. Only consider display ads when your blog accrues at least 10,000 monthly sessions. At that stage, consider applying to networks like Ezoic, Monumetric, or even Google Adsense, as they often pair with these platforms.

If you’re banned from Adsense as a new blogger, it could jeopardize your chances of joining premium ad networks later on. By the time you’re seeing 20,000 monthly sessions, She Media becomes an option, and at 50,000 sessions, Mediavine, which pays significantly more than Adsense.

Leveraging Pinterest for Traffic

Initially, I focused on SEO but soon realized that it takes a considerable amount of time to gain domain authority on Google. So I pivoted to Pinterest and haven’t looked back. Within the first year, thanks to Pinterest, I qualified to join Mediavine, verifying that Pinterest traffic is indeed acceptable for premium ad networks.

Offering Services Through Your Blog

As you grow your blog, you can also use it as a platform to offer services. Whether it’s writing, editing, virtual assistance, or freelancing in your area of expertise, your blog can effectively serve as a marketing tool for these services. Some bloggers, like Amira from ASelfGuru.com, have even developed products like legal templates sold through their blogs, earning substantial incomes.

Selling Your Own Products for Greater Income

When it comes to scaling your blogging business, moving beyond trading time for money is key. Selling your own products, particularly digital ones, presents a major opportunity for growth. It can be as simple as eBooks, printables, templates, stock photos, or courses that align with your expertise and audience interests.

Picking a Profitable Niche

If you aim to monetize your blog, it’s essential to choose a niche that’s not just aligned with your passions but also profitable. Remember to account for the suitability of your niche for platforms like Pinterest if you’re planning to utilize it for traffic. I encourage you to check out my video on the most profitable blogging niches for this year.

Choosing Your Blog’s Domain Name

When it’s time to decide on a domain name, remember to keep it short, memorable, and avoid numbers and hyphens. Aim for a .com domain to maintain a professional standard, and steer clear from misspelled words. If in doubt, using your full name can be a flexible choice allowing for future niche shifts.

Technically Setting Up Your Blog

After choosing a domain, you’ll need to register it and set up your blog. Opt for WordPress as your content management system, the most effective and free option for bloggers. For hosting, select a self-hosted provider; Bluehost is an excellent choice for beginners due to their easy setup, affordability, and excellent customer support. Plus, I have an exclusive offer with Bluehost for my audience (link in description).

Making Your Blog Appealing and Speedy

Your WordPress theme determines your blog’s aesthetics and load times. Astra is a fast and free option, but premium themes like GeneratePress are also worth considering. Fast loading websites are crucial for a positive user experience and for good SEO.

Driving Traffic to Your Blog

As a beginner, focus on one platform at a time to maximize your traffic potential. Pinterest is excellent for quick results, especially if your content aligns with its primarily female demographic. For better long-term stability, Google SEO is your next bet, followed by YouTube. Stick with organic traffic strategies and avoid paid ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Always prioritize one traffic generation method for the best outcomes.
